Keeping yourself safe on the Internet

These days, most kids spend a lot of their time on the internet. This is a brief guide of the essential things to remember about keeping yourself safe online.

Don't accept any offers of money or presents, even free offers.

NEVER arrange any face-to-face meetings with anyone you may meet on the Internet unless you have parent consent and they accompany you.

Never use bad language online, or take part in arguments or fights.

Tell a parent or teacher if you see any bad language or pictures on the Internet, or if anyone writes you anything you don’t like.

Never give out personal details that would identify who you are, such as your last name, address, phone number, school or personal photographs.

Do not reply to any messages or bulletin board items that are suggestive, obscene, aggressive, or distressing.

Never order anything online or give out credit card details unless it is a secure site like Trade Me and you have parental permission.

Avoid chat rooms and other communication websites unless you have agreed with your parents that you may go on them. Always ask first.

Mostly, NEVER do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or insecure. Tell a parent or some-one you trust and avoid un-appropriate sites.
